Packer History

The Moorpark Packers were formed in 1989. The Packers program was founded by Rob Dearborn, then the Head Football Coach (currently the Athletic Director) at Moorpark High School. Rob wanted to create a program which would allow the children of Moorpark to learn and develop a love for the game of football, while teaching them important values such as sportsmanship and discipline.

Since 1989, the Moorpark Packers have developed close ties with the community, which has provided the Packers, and Packers Cheer, with great support. The Packers have built and operate their own practice and game facilities at Arroyo Vista Park, where spectators have enjoyed Packers Football in a family atmosphere.

In an effort to provide its players with the best coaching possible, the Packers have maintained an excellent working relationship with the football coaching staff at Moorpark High School, many of whose children participate in the Packers program. Through this relationship, including clinics put on by the Moorpark High School coaches, the Packers coaches and players learn safe, up to date football techniques. This process also allows the Packers to teach players techniques and game schemes consistent with those used at the high school level, which better prepares players who go on to play football for Moorpark High School

League History

From 1989 until 1993, the Packers played in the Santa BarbaraYouth Football League ("SBYFL"). The Packers left the SBYFL to join a new league forming in the local area.

In 1993, the Packers joined the new Pacific Youth Football League ("PYFL"). The Packers played in the PYFL until 2004. The Packers left the PYFL due to age and weight rule changes in the PYFL which the Packers believed were unsafe.

In 2005, the Packers joined the new Gold Coast Youth Football League ("GCYFL"). The Moorpark Packers, along with Westlake, Simi Valley, Fillmore, Santa Paula, Camarillo, Oxnard, Harvard-Westlake Middle School, and Santa Clarita are all charter members in the formation of the new GCYFL. The GCYFL Chapters (including Moorpark) produced numerous "Super Bowl Championship" teams in the past and will continue providing opportunities for excellent competition into the future.

Packer Mission Statement

The Moorpark Packers are a youth football program with the following goals:

  1. To inspire youth to reach their potential, regardless of race, creed or national origin.
  2. To teach the ideals of good health, citizenship and character.
  3. To bring our youth closer through the means of a common interest in sportsmanship, fair play and fellowship.
  4. To conduct activities with safety, sanity and intelligent supervision.
  5. To put the welfare of the players first and foremost, keeping activities entirely free from the adult lust for glory.
  6. To acquaint the players with the rules and fundamentals of the game of football.

While winning games and championships are important in any competitive sport, they are secondary to the accomplishment of the goals set forth above. The Moorpark Packers strive to win, but to win in a system where every player gets a fair opportunity to learn and play the game. We want every Packers player to enjoy their football experience and want to play Packers Football again.

To help insure the safe and proper instruction of its players, the Packers offer free training to all of its coaches and require that all of their head coaches be certified in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation ("CPR") and complete a course in coaching youth sports offered by the National Youth Sports Coaches Association ("NYSCA"). The NYSCA's course offers training and tests coaches in the areas of coaching techniques, ethics and safety. (read their website for more information...)

Packer Code of Conduct

The goal of Moorpark Packers Football is to provide a safe, enjoyable and rewarding experience for its players, coaches, officials, families and guests. In order to accomplish this goal, the Moorpark Packers have adopted a ZERO Tolerance policy with respect to misconduct at Moorpark Packers functions.

Prohibited conduct includes, but is not limited to:

  1. Making derogatory comments about calls by the referees, or making defaming statements to the referees themselves.
  2. Making derogatory comments about any coaches ability to coach, or the decisions they make concerning the players on their teams.
  3. Making derogatory comments to any player, on the field or off, for any reason.
  4. Making any negative remark made from one spectator to another.
  5. Engaging in any of the above actions will result in removal from the game you are attending and a suspension from the next game. You will also be asked to leave the field, which includes getting into your vehicle and leaving the premises completely. Any subsequent infraction will result in a two game suspension. If the abusive behavior occurs a third time, the person may be permanently removed from the league, pending review by the Board of Directors.

Any person verbally or physically threatening another person at a Moorpark Packers event will be immediately asked to leave, and will be suspended for two games. Any subsequent occurrence of the same offense will result in a one year suspension from attendance at or participation in any league events. Any occurrence after this will result in a permanent removal from Moorpark Packers events.

Any person committing an assault (including but not limited to hitting, kicking, pushing and shoving) which results in bodily injury will be permanently banned from Moorpark Packers events. In the event of any assault, the police will be called and charges may be filed. Any person engaging in an assault which does not result in bodily injury will be brought before the Board of Directors, where a decision about that person's future in the league will be determined.

These rules apply to any person attending a Moorpark Packers event. If you bring friends and relatives to league events, please inform them of league policy concerning acceptable behavior at league events before you arrive at the fields.

Football is an intense and exciting sport. Observing these rules will allow all of the fans and participants to enjoy Moorpark Packers Football in the safe, family atmosphere for which our community is famous.

  • I will treat each player as an individual, remembering the large range of emotional and physical development for the same age group.
  • I will do my best to provide a safe playing situation for my players.
  • I will promise to review and practice basic first aid principles needed to treat injuries of my players.

  • I will use those coaching techniques appropriate for all of the skills that I teach.
  • I will remember that I am a youth sports coach, and that the game is for children and not adults.

Packer Parent Code of Conduct

The essential elements of character-building and ethics in sports are embodied in the concept of sportsmanship and six core principles:

  1. Trustworthiness
  2. Respect
  3. Responsibility
  4. Fairness
  5. Caring
  6. Good Citizenship

The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects these "six pillars of character."

I, the packer sports parent, therefore agree:

  • I will not force my child to participate in sports.
  • I will remember that children participate to have fun and that the game is for youth, not adults.
  • I will inform the coach of any physical disability or ailment that may affect the safety of my child or the safety of others.
  • I will learn the rules of the game and the policies of the league.
  • I (and my guests) will be a positive role model for my child and encourage sportsmanship by showing respect and courtesy, and by demonstrating positive support for all players, coaches, officials and spectators at every game, practice or other sporting event.
  • I (and my guests) will not engage in any kind of unsportsmanlike conduct with any official, coach, player, or parent such as booing and taunting; refusing to shake hands; or using profane language or gestures.
  • I will not encourage any behaviors or practices that would endanger the health and wellbeing of the athletes.
  • I will teach my child to play by the rules and to resolve conflicts without resorting to hostility or violence.
  • I will demand that my child treat other players, coaches, officials and spectators with respect regardless of race, creed, color, sex or ability.
  • I will teach my child that doing one's best is more important than winning, so that my child will never feel defeated by the outcome of a game or his/her performance.
  • I will praise my child for competing fairly and trying hard, and make my child feel like a winner every time.
  • I will never ridicule or yell at my child or other participant for making a mistake or losing a competition.
  • I will emphasize skill development and practices and how they benefit my child over winning. I will also deemphasize games and competition in the lower age groups.
  • I will promote the emotional and physical well-being of the athletes ahead of any personal desire I may have for my child to win.
  • I will respect the officials and their authority during games and will never question, discuss, or confront coaches at the game field, and will take time to speak with coaches at an agreed upon time and place.
  • I will demand a sports environment for my child that is free from drugs, tobacco, and alcohol and I will refrain from their use at all sports events.
